Project Update: Dana Point Pool Remodel
Phase 1: Demolition & Discovery
Demo is complete: we removed the existing coping, waterline tile, plaster, and select portions of the pool deck. With the shell open and clean, we confirmed our measurements, checked bond-beam integrity, and mapped out how the new finishes will interact with the homeowner’s plan to keep most of the existing deck.

Design Decision: A Precise Elevation Change
The owners love their current deck layout, but they’re adding a ¾″ paver overlay for a fresh look. To keep the new coping perfectly flush with the upgraded deck, we’re raising the pool edge approximately 1½″. When you retain an existing deck, the simple rule is “pour the new coping to the deck.” When you overlay with pavers, the math changes — and it’s critical to set the finished elevations and coping thickness so everything lines up cleanly at completion.
Phase 2: Forming & Pour-in-Place Coping
Freeform pools demand careful forming to avoid flat spots. Over the years we’ve honed a method that blends precision with a clean finish: 2×6 forms are kerfed (fine saw cuts) at tight intervals so the wood follows each radius smoothly. With the forms true and level, we placed and finished a San Diego Buff color coping in a smooth finish that will complement the new deck and tile.

What’s Next
With coping poured and elevations locked, we’re moving into waterproofing and then setting the new waterline tile. Those two steps tie the structure and finishes together and set the stage for interior surface work.
Pro Notes from the Field
- Elevation planning happens before you order materials. Deck thickness, coping profile, and tile height must reconcile on paper first.
- Kerfing forms (fine cuts every inch or so) lets curved forms sit tight to the layout and eliminates “flat-spot” shadows in the finished coping.
- Finish selection matters: San Diego Buff in a smooth finish delivers warmth and a comfortable hand-feel at the water’s edge.
